桜の季節はすぐそこまで来ています。
Although we usually focus on the cherry blossoms,
いつも花ばかり注目されていますが
let's focus on the cherry bark today.
今日は桜の皮についてみてみましょう。
Kabazaiku is famous as one of Japanese traditional crafts.
樺細工は日本の伝統工芸の一つです。
It is made with layers of the bark of mountain cherry trees.
ヤマザクラの皮が使われます。
Kabazaiku was a side gig of lower-ranking Samurai
樺細工は下級武士の手内職として
around the end of 18th century in Kakunodate, Akita prefecture.
18世紀の終わり頃、秋田県の角館で定着しました。
A large number of artisans took over this craftwork from Samurai
多くの職人が侍からこの工芸を引き継ぎ
They produce many kinds of Kabazaiku goods,
such as tea container, tray, and so on.
茶筒、お盆など様々な樺細工を生み出しました。
When I visited Kakunodate,
角館を訪れた時
I bought this tea scoop of Kabaziku.
樺細工の茶杓を買いました。
I’m thinking it is timely to use it in my small spring tea gathering
春の気軽なお茶会にこの茶杓を使うとぴったりかなと思ったりしています。
because the tea scoop is made from cherry bark.
桜の季節、桜の皮からできているから。
